Fireball XL5
The children's television program Fireball XL5 follows the exploits of the starship Fireball XL5, which is led by Colonel Steve Zodiac of the World Space Patrol. The programme is based on the genre of science fiction. In1962, husband and wife combination Gerry and Sylvia Anderson produced the show through their firm, APF, in partnership with ATV for ITC Entertainment. The Andersons were married at the time. Anderson thought that the name of a brand of motor oil, Castrol XL, had an interesting sound as he was designing his new program. A phonetic alteration resulted in the creation of the term "Fireball XL," and the"-5" was added to the title because it felt a bit empty without the numeral. The Andersons' Supermarionation, a kind of puppetry that had its debut in Four Feather Falls and Supercar and was subsequently used in the Andersons' later creations such as Stingray and Captain Scarlet, was included in this performance. On 35mm film, 39 half-hour episodes of Fireball XL5 were shot in black and white. Subsequent series created by Anderson were all shot in color. However, Fireball XL5 is the only Anderson series that has ever been broadcast on a network in the United States. Other Anderson series have been screened in syndication in the United States. The series was broadcast on NBC during the children's block on Saturday mornings beginning in 1963 and continuing until September 1965. Space Patrol is a program that is frequently confused with Fireball XL5. Space Patrol was produced by Gerry Anderson's former business partner and co-founder of AP Films, Arthur Provis. Due to a number of similarities and settings, Fireball XL5 and Space Patrol are frequently confused with one another.
