During the campaign for re election, the crooked politician Paul Madvig decides to clean up his past, associating to the commendable politician Ralph Henry and denying that the aid of this gangster Nick Varna. Ed Beaumont, Paul's right arm, finds his own body on the street After Ralph's son of Paul's sister's Opal, is murdered. Nick employs The Observer's situation to induce the writer Clyde Matthews to use the newspaper to boost the feeling that Paul Madvig could have killed Taylor.
